Itis the process of giving a protective coating on the warp yarn to minimize yarn breakage during weaving. Sizing is the most important operation in preparing warp yarn for weaving especially with cotton yarn. The role of Textile sizing adhesive is to provide a thin layer on the yarn surface to resist the yarn from breakage.
Basically, starch provides the stiffness and perfect bonding within a sheet of paper. Cationic starch is added to improve internal bond, tensile strength, and as part of certain retention and drainage programs.
The process of applying a protective adhesive coating upon the yarns surface is called sizing. This adhesive can be one shot starch or single shot sizing chemical or a blend of multiple chemicals to achieve desired properties. Mainly maize starch, sago starch, wheat starch, potato starch are used as adhesive agents in sizing. The stickiness of sizing liquor with untreated starch is always high. It gives poor penetration in the warp yarn.
It is applied into the yarn mainly to improve the weave ability of warp yarn by making it more resistant to action of weaving such as absorption, friction, tension and flexing. This sizing process also maintains the good fabric quality by reducing hairiness, weakness, and by increasing smoothness, absorbency of yarn.
